CALIFORNIA GOOD SAMARITAN FOOD DONATION ACT California recently passed the California Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (AB 1219), which provides liability protections for entities that make good faith donations of surplus food. AB 1219 clarifies and expands liability protections for donated surplus food by:

 Creating a more comprehensive list of entities covered by law.

 Explicitly states that donation of past-date food is subject to liability protection.

 Expands liability protection to donations made by food facilities, which are subject to food safety regulations and inspections, directly to individuals for consumption (direct donation).

Some teachers get on a very personal level and develop bonds with their students. Is it possible that you have met a student who struggles financially at home? Were they having difficulty getting meals at home? How did they have to cope with it?

Yes, I have met many students that have financial struggles at home. -Ugalde

Have any of your students ever dropped out to help support their families financially?

Iḿ not sure exactly how many have had to but I know that some have left school or have chosen not to attend class in order to work to support their family. -Ugalde

Do you personally know someone that struggles with purchasing groceries, having a meal everyday at home or has financial issues at home?

If school meals were not free, would you see yourself buying food everyday or would you be unable to afford it?

“If school lunches were not free, I would most likely struggle to get through the day, and maybe only pay for food when I really need it. Being from a low income household, that additional fee for ‘school food’ would become a side thing that’s not needed.”
